Calling All Birders this June!

Attention birders, we invite you to be a citizen scientist this June in Manning Park!

The Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning has regrettably had to cancel their annual Bird Blitz in Manning Park due to COVID-19 concerns, however, we invite you to do some self-guided birding in Manning Park and report your findings to the Hope Mountain Centre. This will allow some data to still be reported for the 2020 season.

From the Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning:

“We would like to propose that any birders interested in visiting Manning June 5-7 should feel free to do so following the latest guidance from the BC Public Health Officer. If you are able to visit the park and record the birds you see and hear, you can share the data with us electronically. This might allow us to salvage some quality birding data and avoid a data doughnut in 2020! We would also be interested in any Manning bird data you gather in the weeks following (June 8 to 21).
Please be aware that any birding activity you undertake would NOT be considered part of a Hope Mountain Centre event. Birders must assume all risk to themselves while visiting Manning Park.

If you would like to participate in gathering bird data for Manning Park, there are forms to collect the data on this website, under “Additional Information.” You are asked to identify an area from the Manning Bird Blitz Designated Birding Areas & Birds to Watch For, and report what birds you have seen on the Field Tally Sheet.

Please remember to fill in all appropriate information including the Area, date and birds you see. After you have finished your birding, you can email your findings to the Hope Mountain Centre.

Please note that not all areas are open in the park, due to snow. For example, the Heather Trail and other high alpine trails are not open, or may be inaccessible due to snow. For updated information on the trails, please see the BC Parks Trail report on our Maps & Stats page.

For any other information for reporting birds in the park, please contact the Hope Mountain Centre program assistant Tunde Murphy.

Guests are reminded to follow all provincial and federal guidelines for social distancing while in the park.

Happy birding!
